Neck lift San Diego
The Neck Lift is a popular procedure in San Diego and focuses on rejuvenation of the neck only, to the exclusion of the jowls (jaw line) and cheeks. Candidates for a neck lift generally say “I just hate my neck” and point to sagging skin, loose muscle bands (turkey gobbler), or excess fat under their chin. The ideal candidate is relatively young, ranging in age from 20 to 50, without excess drooping of the jowls or jaw line. However, older patients can be great candidates for this procedure as long as their upper face is aging relatively slowly compared with their neck. The neck lift can also be used as a “tuck up” procedure for a previous facelift. Contraindications include severe neck laxity, moderate to severe jowl and cheek heaviness, and history of smoking or other medical issues.

*The neck lift can be performed with local anesthesia , however most patients choose oral or intravenous sedation. General anesthesia is rarely necessary. Depending on the patient, the procedure may involve any combination of liposuction, anterior muscle tightening (under the chin), posterior muscle tightening (behind the ear), and possible chin implant. Younger patients may benefit from a procedure as simple as submental (neck) liposuction, whereas older patients or those with loose muscle bands may need muscle tightening. If the chin is weak, the neck lift presents an ideal opportunity to insert a chin implant. The implant can be inserted through the same incision and serves to improve the results.

Q: Should I have a Neck Lift or a Lower Facelift?
A: If your jowls (jaw line) and cheek pads are in good position then a neck lift may be all you need. The best way to know for sure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. David at our La Jolla office.
One variation of the neck lift is also known as a Direct NeckLift. This involves an extended incision below the chin with excision of a significant amount of skin. The direct necklift can produce a dramatic improvement and is a quick operation; however, healing can be variable and the scar may occasionally be visible.
*Our San Diego necklift patients wear a compressive bandage for 24 hours after surgery, but are able to return home the same day. Patients also have the option of spending a night at the adjacent Sheraton Hotel in La Jolla, and a nursing assistant is available. The following morning, patients return to our office for dressing removal. Our staff will teach you how to care for your necklift incisions, and you will return home with a removable velcro chin strap. Recovery from this procedure may be one to two weeks, depending on the exact type of surgery. Sutures are removed in 4-7 days, and bruising is generally minor. Most patients report returning to work within one to two weeks following their necklift.
Complications from a necklift are rare, but may include minor bleeding (hematoma), scarring, or need for additional surgery. Nerve damage is theoretically possible, however numbness usually resolves within several months.
Dear Dr. David,
